The Best and Worst Wedding Songs Are the Same

I know I’m not the only one who cringes whenever I’m at a wedding and the Chicken Dance comes on. It’s one of the corniest wedding songs in history if you ask me. At the same time, however, it’s one of the favorite dance songs at weddings also. When people first hear that accordion, they’ll cheer, jump up, and get on the dance floor so they can flap their arms and do all sorts of strange stuff.

As much as many of us want to cringe and find a way to sneak out of the room, just as many people can’t wait to get out on the dance floor and strut their stuff. People love group dances; it’s been proven over and over. Give someone a song where they already know the moves and don’t have to be good dancers and they’re ready to go.

The problem for some of us is that there are very few cool songs which people can dance to in groups. So we have to suffer while other people are having all the fun. And what songs are there besides the Chicken Dance?

Probably the newest song out there is the Macarena. Most people have no idea what the lyrics are to the song, but they don’t care. At least this song has a beat, but if you ever saw the video, you know these were two guys who never had any inkling that their little ditty would turn out to be such a big hit this many years later.

Of course, there’s the Hokey Pokey, a little song that no one even agrees on where it came from. It’s the strangest thing seeing people putting in left or right body parts then shaking their bodies around in a funny little shimmy.

Another relatively new song in this genre is the Electric Slide. The music is definitely weak and irritating, but it has one of the better dance moves of all the songs. A song called the Cha Cha Song also has some pretty cool dance moves, but the music is less than enthusiastic.

It doesn’t matter what I like or don’t like. If you like it go ahead, have it at your wedding, dance to it, and enjoy it. I’ll use that time to get more cake.
